How to Buy a Baseball Pitching Mound
What are the different types of Pitching Mounds?
We have several different types of portable baseball pitching mounds available, but most commonly they break down to three categories: Game Mounds, Practice Mounds and Practice Pitching Platforms.
Outdoor game mounds are great for leagues and teams that do not have the ability to maintain a field or need to convert a field to fit their needs.
Practice mounds are perfect for indoor training and facilities in the months that training outside or on a game mound is not an option.
Pitching Platforms protect the field and are typically easy to transport for use both indoors and out.
Depending on the use of the mound, you will also want to determine if the mound can be used indoors or outdoors.
What height baseball pitching mound do I need?
Height refers to the height of the mound above the home plate. Th height of the mound typically correlates with age of the players and the size of the field.
10” – High School, College, Major & Minor League
10” is standard for most High School, NCAA and Major/Minor League Baseball.
8” – Ages 12-14
8” is common for older little league, typically ages 12-14
6” – Ages 11 and under
6” is standard in little league for ages 11 and under.
What Pitching Mounds can be used with metal cleats?
We do not recommend using any of our pitching mounds with metal spikes. In our experience, no mound is completely resistant to metal spikes, however we understand that mounds will be used with metal cleats. Many of our mounds now have a reinforced pitching lane so no damage is done to the shell of the mound. The turf will damage over time, but turf replacement kits are available.
